Journals in Cimplico Workpapers serve their traditional purpose, such as:

  • Recording transactions.

  • Recording end-of-year adjustments.

  • Moving transactions between accounts.

💡 Tip: This article focuses on creating and managing journals within a worksheet. For more details on the benefits of using journals directly in workpapers, FAQs, best practices, and additional use cases, see the Journals Collection.

Creating a journal

  1. Access the Journals Tab

    • Open the worksheet where you want to create a journal.

    • Navigate to the Journals tab in the worksheet.

  2. Start a New Journal

    • Click New Journal to begin.

  3. Enter Journal-Level Details

    • Date: Specify the date of the journal entry.

    • Narration: Provide a description of the journal’s purpose.

  4. Add Journal Lines

    • Click Add Line as required

  5. Add Line details

    • Description: Enter a description for the transaction (this will populate with the journal narration, but can be edited)

    • Account: Select the account to which the entry applies.

    • Amount (DR/CR): Specify the debit or credit amount.

    • The final line will always default to the worksheet account and automatically balance the journal.

  6. Save the Journal

    • Choose one of the following options:

      • Save and Post: Post the journal to your connected ledger, or Cimplico Workpapers if you used a manual trial balance import.

      • Save as Draft: Save the journal without posting it to the client’s ledger, keeping it internal for now.

ℹ️ Note: Reviewers and approvers can always post journals. Whether a preparer can post a journal depends on whether the ‘Allow Preparers to Post Journals’ toggle is turned on in the workpaper settings.

For more information, see the Editing Workpaper Settings article.

Managing Journals

Editing Journals

Draft and Posted Journals can both be edited.

  1. Open the journal you want to edit

  2. Select the Edit button

  3. Make changes as required

  4. Select Save

Voiding Journals

To remove a posted journal, it must be voided (i.e. it can't be deleted)

  1. Open the journal you want to void

  2. Select the Void button

  3. Confirm the Void from the pop-up

Deleting Journals

To remove a draft journal, it can be deleted

  1. Open the journal you want to delete

  2. Click Delete to remove the draft journal permanently.

💡 Tip: Journals can be deleted or voided in bulk by returning to the worksheet's journal list and selecting multiple journals using the checkbox. Once selected, a delete journal and void journal button will appear.
