The Chart of Accounts (COA) for an entity lives under the entity itself, not inside the workpaper. You can find it by navigating to the entity and selecting Chart of Accounts.
What you need to do with the COA depends on whether the entity is connected to Xero or managed manually.
Xero-Linked Entities
If the entity is connected to Xero, there's generally nothing you need to do. Cimplico Workpapers automatically pulls the Chart of Accounts in from Xero and keeps it under the entity.
When you create a workpaper, use the Xero integration as normal. We'll bring in both the Chart of Accounts and the trial balance for you.
If you make significant changes to the COA mid-job
If you make significant changes to the client's Chart of Accounts in Xero while preparing a workpaper (for example, changing several account codes or names), you may see an "Unmapped accounts" message the next time you update the trial balance. This means some accounts in your workpaper no longer match the accounts in the entity's Chart of Accounts.
To resolve this:
Go to the trial balance settings.
Map the unmapped accounts to the correct accounts in the Chart of Accounts.
Select Confirm.
Manual (Non-Xero) Entities
If your client doesn't use Xero and you're bringing their trial balance data into Cimplico Workpapers manually, you'll need to upload the Chart of Accounts before you upload the trial balance.
Navigate to the entity.
Select Chart of Accounts.
Download the CSV template, if you don't already have one.
Complete the CSV using the requirements below.
Upload the completed CSV file.
Once the Chart of Accounts is uploaded, you can create the workpaper and upload the trial balance. See Creating a workpaper for those steps.
CSV Requirements
Field | Description |
Code * | The account code. |
Name * | The account name. |
Description | Additional account description. |
Report Code * | The report code that links to your workpaper checklist. |
Type * | The account type (e.g. Other Income, Fixed Assets). This is typically more specific than the class below. |

Fields marked with an asterisk (*) are mandatory. Only Description is optional.
Adding new accounts mid-job
If you need to add new accounts partway through a job, you can't add them by updating the trial balance alone. You'll need to:
Update the Chart of Accounts first, adding the new accounts.
Upload a new trial balance CSV that includes the new accounts.
If your new COA and TB has a reduced amount of accounts, you may be asked to map any unmapped accounts. Map and confirm the accounts as needed.
