When preparing or reviewing a worksheet, you may need something clarified by your reviewer or other preparers. In these instances, you can use internal comments to create threads contextualised to the worksheet you're on, that facilitates discussions to lead to a resolution.

You can see the internal comments section in the worksheet sidebar, where you'll see 2 icons. The first is for internal comments, the second is for client queries, covered further in Creating a client query for a worksheet.

In the internal comments section, you can view active threads (and resolved threads via the filter) and create new threads via the New Thread button.

internal comments overview

As there may be back-and-forth interactions when preparing/reviewing a worksheet, internal comments are a thread-based system where users create threads with their question/comment being the topic of the thread.

You can tag a user in an internal comment by typing the "@" key, which will bring up a list of users to select. Tagged users will be notified of the comment. Notifications are covered in more detail in Notifications.

Additionally, you can use other rich-text features, such as bold, italics, underline, and bullet/number points to assist in forming a more specific comment for other users.

new comment

Once a thread is created, click on it to see the discussions on the query and to add replies to come to a resolution.

When a resolution has been achieved, you can then mark the thread as resolved, and similarly, you can revert a resolved thread to active.

resolving comment

Once a comment has been resolved, it can no longer accept replies. Therefore, if you require further conversation on a resolved thread you can revert it to active and continue your conversation.

For a worksheet to be ready for review, all internal comments must be resolved, otherwise the reviewer will be unable to review the worksheet. If a resolved thread becomes active, or a new thread is created on a reviewed worksheet, the worksheet will change from reviewed to unprepared.
